Checking Your Credit Score Online
In today's world of tight schedules and short days it's hard to find the time anymore to run down to the bank or credit office and get a paper copy of your credit report. In fact it's down right hard to imagine that, that used to be how everyone did it not too long ago. The truth is more and more people are checking their credit score online and it's proven to be a luxury most can't seem to live without. With luxuries come risks though and the bad news in this case is there are a lot of risks. Whether it be fraud or expenses one can never be too careful when checking their credit score online. There are key things to look for whenever any sort of financial transaction occurs on the Internet.
If you simply want to check your credit score online then there are a couple options. The first is to request your free annual credit report from the big three credit agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can do it separately or receive three reports at the same time, one from each agency. All of them have websites which require you to register an account, but once you do you have available to you, among a myriad of other things, the option to request your credit score online. If you wish to check your credit score online more than once a year however, you will need to find another means to do so. The safest and most reliable way is through your bank or credit union. In almost all cases they should have some sort of website which allows you to securely request either a paper copy in the mail or a digital copy. Often times this service will come with a fee, but some banks and credit unions will provide this service free of charge, but it's always best to check with a representative first.
If you're going to stray away from the official credit bureau's websites and you choose not to use your banks services then there are a couple things you must do. Firstly, any website claiming to be legitimate should usually be certified with a credit agency and should also provide a secure connection; this is normally represented as a small pad-lock somewhere on the screen. Secondly, always read the websites fine print. What seems like a great deal can easily become a multi-annual commitment with large fees. Thirdly, do a little research about the site. If it is really legitimate there should be some discussion on the web about them. Simply use your favorite search engine and enter their name. If there is no one talking about them, don't use them.
Checking your credit score online can be a risky venture. It can be downright dangerous and can ruin your credit score and compromise your privacy if any personal details happen to be leaked. It simply doesn't have to be that way though. Look for the clues and always feel open to discuss resources with a trusted professional, that's why they are there. Ask friends or family how they check their credit score online and if you're really lost about where to start or who to use, just take a trip down to your bank and one of the accountants there will be more than happy to walk you through the entire process.
